How is genomic surveillance of malaria parasites influencing national antimalarial drug policy in Southeast Asia?
In this podcast we speak to Professor Olivo Miotto, Associate Professor, Nuffield Department of Medicine, Oxford University, Oxford. We’ll be talking about the GenRe-Mekong project, the largest implementation of malaria molecular surveillance to date. GenRe is an international collaboration involving five national malaria control programs (NMCPs) and various local partners from South and Southeast Asia, primarily the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS).
Professor Miotto describes
- the ambitions of GeRe-Mekong for controlling and eliminating malaria
- the main challenges of sampling and genotyping parasite genomes across the Mekong delta
- how genomic surveillance is helping shape national antimalarial drug policy in different countries across the region.

MalariaGEN Podcasts focus on genomic surveillance and drug and insecticide resistance in Plasmodium parasites and Anopheles mosquitoes. They explore how genomic research collaborations and data-sharing are increasing our understanding of how to control and eliminate the disease.
MalariaGEN partners have built the world’s largest reference data resource for the species that cause and transmit malaria.
